Bear Valley Rescue: Available Foster Horses

These horses are looking for temporary or permanent foster homes that are willing to provide the extra special care they need. Care expenses can also be tax-receipted. Check out the sponsors and benefactors page for a list of current sponsors. Please email or call if you are interested in sponsoring or fostering one of these special horses. Please note that these are horses that require special care or are best as companion animals only. None of these mares will be fostered for re-breeding! - Please Contact BVR for more information. - Please click here to learn about fostering a horse. - To see the horses who have found foster homes, click here. The first six horses on this page are the ones that were rescued off a reserve by Rocky Mountain House. Six other horse carcasses were found in the small pasture. These horses, with the exception of the stallion, are in very bad shape, near starvation. We still do not have a signed release for these horses as the RCMP is having difficulty establishing ownership. No one wants to come forward since they would be charged for not caring for them. They will not be going anywhere until we have the authority to move them or place them in new homes. Thank you to everyone who has offered their support!

Sunchild is a beautiful appaloosa. He has been gelded but is still a bit 'studly' in his behaviour with the other colts and geldings. He is halterbroke and well mannered, probably quite young, maybe 4 or 5 years old at most.

Miracle is a yearing sorrel filly. She is very thin and had pneumonia. After a round of medication and stall care she is much better. She lay down almost as soon as we got her here and was unable to get back up without help, though she's been standing for longer periods of time every day. *Update Apr 8 - Miracle is now usually able to get up by herself. Her last vet check-up was good, her lungs and heart sound much better. We've started taking her outdoors for short walks.

Badger is a solid bay mare, malnourished and very pregnant. Probably not that old, she is quiet, halterbroke, may even be broke to ride. *April 29th - Badger had her foal, a beautiful bay filly. Mom and baby are doing fine.

Deuce is another bay mare, fairly young and very thin. She is also probably halterbroke, may be broke to ride. She was pregnant but lost her foal. May 14 - she's doing so well she'll be going down to join the herd this weekend.

Trey is yet one more very thin, very pregnant bay mare, also young. She's a little less friendly than the other mares when it comes to being handled, though she is now already the first one over looking for treats. *UPDATE May 7/08 - Trey had her foal this morning, a healthy bay filly.

Maggie is a pretty appaloosa/paint filly, probably 2 years old. She's unhandled, though we managed to deworm her without too much fuss. She is also very thin, hopefully hasn't been bred. She's also becoming more friendly each day. May 14 - she's doing great so will join the herd this weekend.

Monkey is a nice quiet little 2 year old sorrel gelding, registered AQHA. He had a bad run-in with barbed wire and seriously injured his hind leg. He is healing slowly. He is very nice to handle due to all the care he's required during his recovery. He needs his leg wrapped every couple of days and hopefully he'll be good as new one day, with only some scarring. He does walk fine now in spite of his injury.

Raffy is a nice tall 2 year old AQHA registered gelding. He has been halterbroke and is friendly but requires some more groundwork. He has a deformity in one hind pastern so may never be sound, though as he grows and his bones fuse he may become sound enough for some very light riding.

**FOSTERED**Reba (Jim Jim Reb) is a sorrel registered QH mare, 17 years old, from Washington. She is pregnant, bred to a blue roan stallion. We assume she's halter broke but don't know if she's ever been ridden. She is quiet but seems shy, so maybe not. She won't be available until fall, after her foal is weaned.

**FOSTERED** Silk is a bay mare, probably around 10-12 years old. She is probably only halter broke, was a brood mare. She is nice and quiet now, though she was shy to start with and she was good for the farrier. She had exhibited a bit of soreness but looks like it was an abscess that's now worked its way out.

Brandy is a smaller Arab-type bay mare. She is 10-14 years of age, an ex-pmu mare from Manitoba. She is quite shy but is halter broke. She has some soreness in her feet, was trimmed by a farrier (as opposed to a tipping table) for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Dru is an 18y/o Thoroughbred mare (registered as 'Drouilly's Girl'). She is nice to handle, though she has a ricochet kick if another horse comes around her food! She was raced as a 2-3 year old. Dru had her foal, he was born March 10! He's a gorgeous palomino, will be a big boy.

Payton is an older sorrel mare, probably somewhere in her 20's, smaller in size (around 14.2). She is most likely very well broke, was extremely underweight but seems to be doing better. She has some slackness on one side of her face, and occassionally will stumble, so she may have had a stroke at some time. Due to her age Payton will remain here at Bear Valley but is still looking for a virtual foster!

**FOSTER PENDING** Ginger and Shadow are mother/daughter. Ginger is 23, Icelandic pony type. Shadow is her daughter, QH cross. They are pets, not broke to ride, looking for a together home. Ginger is quiet and friendly, Shadow is a bit fiesty but has settled down a lot.

Dangler is a 19-20y/o Thoroughbred gelding. He had hip surgery at some point, and is also touchy around his head, as he was apparently badly beaten at some point. Dangler and Gemma would be a good to foster together as they are buddies.

Pet is a beautiful 30y/o registered palomino Quarter Horse mare, goes back to Kilobar and King Leo Bar on her sire's side. She is too old for riding but is very sweet. She needs extra care because she doesn't have much left in the way of teeth. Due to her age Pet is another one that will remain at Bear Valley but would like a virtual foster person.

Lady is a registered Quarter Horse mare (registered as 'Miss Sher Lady Moore'). She is very pretty and tall, but she has arthitis in one knee and a fistula of the wither that we can't really do anything more with, surgery not being a good option. She is very shy, but nice to handle once caught. Lady will remain at Bear Valley as she is too sore to be hauled anywhere.
